Polio continues to paralyze in parts of the world & mainly affects children under 5. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis, usually in the legs; and among those paralyzed, 5-10% die when chest muscles become immobilized & they can no longer breathe. Globally, we are more than 99% there! Unlike most diseases, polio CAN be eradicated. There are 3 strains of wild poliovirus, none of which can survive for long outside of the human body. If the virus cannot find an unvaccinated human host, it will die out. Type 2 was eradicated in 1999 & cases of Type 3 haven't been found since 2012. What's more, 1 dose of Oral Polio Vaccine can cost at little as 14 cents! Areas now declared polio-free include India (2011), Southeast Asia (2014) AND AFRICA ON AUG. 25, 2020! Two countries continue to struggle: Pakistan & Afghanistan, and polio can still spread to other countries with poor vaccination practices. Every child must be vaccinated, and so we give for children everywhere. THANK YOU!
