Despite pandemic challenges, so far this calendar year, only two cases of wild poliovirus have been reported — one in Afghanistan and one in Pakistan — compared to 116 last year (as of 28 September 2021). There has also been a significant reduction of wild poliovirus detected in the environment and a decline in cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV), which occur when the live, weakened virus used in the oral polio vaccine circulates in under-immunized communities.

Let's help Rotary eradicate Polio by making a donation in support of World Polio Day, October 24th! Only 2 cases of the wild polio virus in the world to date - let's get to Zero! No donation is too small - tax receipts for donations of $10 and up!
Oak Bay Rotary members thank you for your support!
Sunday October 24th is World Polio Day. Rotary International (RI) along with other health organizations and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have been tirelessly working to eradicate polio. In 1979 RI began its fight against polio with a multi-year project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines; there were 350,000 cases worldwide/day. As of September 19th 2021 there are 2 cases world wide, both in Afghanistan.
RI continues worldwide to inoculate children and will continue to do so for 3 years following the last documented case of polio. Fundraising continues for this purpose.
As an Oak Bay Rotarian, Holly and I will be walking 5K on Sunday October 24th. Hoping you will sponsor one or both of us. Donations of $10 or more will be issued tax receipts by RI. (Oak Bay Rotary cannot issue tax receipts).
